Photosynthetic Competence of the Marine Aerobic Anoxygenic Phototrophic Bacterium Roseobacter sp. under Organic Substrate Limitation

چکیده
This paper describes the photosynthetic response of a Roseobacter strain of marine aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria to an organic substrate limitation. In batch cultures, higher values of the spheroidenone/bacteriochlorophyll a ratio were observed under substrate-deficient conditions. Interestingly, the maximum photochemical quantum efficiencies of the photosystem under substrate-deficient conditions using blue or green excitation were significantly higher than those under substrate-replete conditions. These results indicate that spheroidenone, which can absorb green light, may play an important role in their photosynthesis as a light-harvesting antenna pigment, and the photosynthetic competence of the Roseobacter strain can increase in an organic substrate-deficient environment.

Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria.
The aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria are a relatively recently discovered bacterial group. Although taxonomically and phylogenetically heterogeneous, these bacteria share the following distinguishing features: the presence of bacteriochlorophyll a incorporated into reaction center and light-harvesting complexes, low levels of the photosynthetic unit in cells, an abundance of carotenoids...

Citromicrobium bathyomarinum is a bacteriochlorophyll a-containing aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacterium. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of C. bathyomarinum JL354, which was the first C. bathyomarinum strain isolated from a euphotic marine environment. The JL354 genome sequence reveals, for the first time, the coexistence of two different photosynthetic operons in a single strain.

BACKGROUND Aerobic anoxygenic photototrophic (AAP) bacteria represent an important group of marine microorganisms inhabiting the euphotic zone of the ocean. They harvest light using bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) a and are thought to be important players in carbon cycling in the ocean. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria represent an important part of mar...
متن کاملDistribution of planktonic aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotrophic bacteria in the northwest Atlantic
Aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotrophic (AAP) bacteria can use both dissolved organic matter and light for energy production, but their photosynthesis does not produce oxygen. We measured AAP bacterial cell and bacteriochlorophyll distributions in the northwest Atlantic, from the coast of the Gulf of Maine to the Sargasso Sea, in October 2001 and March 2002. The abundance of AAPs ranged from 7 3 ...
